Until 1904, when it took on its current name after newspaper The New York Times moved their headquarters there, Times Square was known as Long Acre Square.

The very first New Year’s Eve ball drop in Times Square was on December 31, 1907. The tradition has been kept every year with the exceptions of 1942 and 1943 when there were mandatory wartime blackouts.
On August 15, 1945, an estimated 2 million people visited Times Square to celebrate US victory in World War II. That was when photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt captured one of history’s most famous images, the iconic kiss between a sailor and a nurse.
